Food Quality Differences – Processed – Natural – Organic

Becoming familiar with food labeling laws will help define differences in foods at your local grocery store.  The label is telling.  Take for example peanut butter.  Natural peanut butter consists of peanuts and sometimes a bit of salt.  Processed peanut butter includes peanuts, salt and sugar or high fructose corn syrup, along with other ingredients that are not needed and can have a negative effect on your health.  While organic peanut butter would just be ground peanuts that where grown on land without pesticides or herbicides.
Beef, lamb, pork and poultry are most often feed with antibiotics and growth hormones.  Unnatural practices are used to increases production.  Increased production resulting in human resistance to antibiotics on bacteria is just one of the known problems.

Look for products labeled ‘natural’ indicating theimages11 animal has not been given antibiotics or growth hormones.  Natural foods are foods that are minimally processed. Natural foods do not include ingredients such as refined sugars, refined flours, milled grains, hydrogenated oils, sweeteners, food colors, or flavorings.  Proponents of natural foods diets argue that refined ingredients promote obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.

Products labeled ‘certified organic’ indicates that theimages891 producer upholds a rigorous set of standards for production that go beyond natural.  Livestock must be reared without the routine use of antibiotics and without the use of growth hormones and are generally fed a healthy diet. In most countries, organic produce may not be geneticaly modified.  Contrary to popular belief, certain non-organic fertilizers are still used.  You are able to see more organic foods in the store with the passage of time.

Knowing the differences in food quality and wanting to make good choices in most cases will lead to better health.  Natural and organic foods are more nutritious and better support energy needs.
