Food Quality Differences – Processed – Natural – Organic
Look for products labeled ‘natural’ indicating the
animal has not been given antibiotics or growth hormones. Natural foods are foods that are minimally processed. Natural foods do not include ingredients such as refined sugars, refined flours, milled grains, hydrogenated oils, sweeteners, food colors, or flavorings. Proponents of natural foods diets argue that refined ingredients promote obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease.
Products labeled ‘certified organic’ indicates that the
producer upholds a rigorous set of standards for production that go beyond natural. Livestock must be reared without the routine use of antibiotics and without the use of growth hormones and are generally fed a healthy diet. In most countries, organic produce may not be geneticaly modified. Contrary to popular belief, certain non-organic fertilizers are still used. You are able to see more organic foods in the store with the passage of time.
Knowing the differences in food quality and wanting to make good choices in most cases will lead to better health. Natural and organic foods are more nutritious and better support energy needs.
