Overweight Men Are More Likely To Die From Prostate Cancer
According to the American Cancer Society, one in six men will develop prostate cancer at some point in their lives. Men who are overweight have an increased risk of cancer. Overweight men who are obese with a body mass index over 32.5 have about a one-third greater risk of dying from prostate cancer than men who are not obese according to the Society.
American men are almost 5 times more likely to die of prostate cancer than Japanese men. It is not that Japanese men never get prostate cancer. Apparently, however, the cancer is delayed and the growth is slower. Why is this? Japanese men have some of the highest consumption of soy-based products like tofu and soymilk. That appears to be why the death rate for Japanese men from this disease is much lower that that of American men.
The exception to the rule occurs when Japanese men move to the United States, and switch from a Japanese diet that includes soy products to a typical American diet. These Japanese men end up with similar prostate cancer death rates relative to their American counterpart.
Being overweight is a large factor. Couple this with increase age above 45, family history (one close relative who has died of prostate cancer doubles the risk; two close relative increases the risk five fold) and race where African American have a higher risk and Asian men have less risk. No your risk but minimize by including soy products in your diet would be my conclusion.
